One of two Laysan Albatrosses--our target bird! Photo by Greg Gillson.
Beautiful sunny weather and moderate seas were enjoyed by all. Target species included two different LAYSAN ALBATROSSES at close range and several small flocks of ANCIENT MURRELETS. We saw a few SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS fly by at a distance, but views of this winter specialty were disappointing.
Good numbers of birds were near shore, including unprecedented BROWN PELICANS that have been here all winter. We swung back along shore for about 4 miles on our return trip and picked up 26 MARBLED MURRELETS to add to the half dozen we saw in the morning. Birds in the zone from 5 miles out to 20 miles were scattered in the morning and nearly absent on the return trip, a rather unusual situation for this locale.
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were in good numbers, as expected for March. However, RHINOCEROS AUKLETS were in low numbers for this time of year.
In all, a good trip finding all the expected species, including the target "winter" specialties.
